Presentation of Male Hair Loss: The common manifestation of Androgenetic Alopecia in men is the receding hairline around the temples and thinning at the top of the head, known as male pattern hair loss. Interestingly, regional variations exist. For instance, 3.9% of Australian men and a significant 11.1% of Korean men display a pattern termed “female pattern hair loss (FPHL).” This pattern is marked by a widespread thinning in the central region of the scalp, especially the crown, while the frontal hairline remains largely intact.
Introducing the Modified Sinclair Scale: Drawing inspiration from the original Sinclair scale - a 5-point visual tool for evaluating FPHL in women - expert dermatologists have crafted a modified version tailored for men. This revamped scale incorporates five illustrative photos highlighting the diverse hair loss patterns in men. Recognizing the variety in men's hairstyles, the scale presents two distinct composite images: one for men with shorter hair and another for those with longer locks.
Diagnostic Insights: For the most part, the underlying scalp remains healthy in men with androgenetic alopecia. There might be instances of heightened hair shedding, and during examination, a “hair pull” test could be positive. This test is considered positive if hairs are effortlessly pulled out from the scalp. Delving into the genetic predisposition, around 80% of affected individuals have a family member with Male Androgenetic Alopecia (MAA). Surprisingly, in 20% of cases, there's an absence of a familial link.
By understanding these varied patterns and using precise diagnostic tools, more effective and personalized treatment plans can be developed for individuals.
